Amazing Komodo Dragons in Rinca Island

Komodo Dragon

Have you been at Rinca Island in Komodo National Park Indonesia?
If you have been there, you know what happen when you are going entry to the park. Did you find amazing Dragon in gate way after pass the jetty on boat parking area? Here Komodo Park’s teams want to tell you something about Komodo Dragons in front of Jetty in Rinca Island. Some people said that Komodo Dragons that always lying in front of Jetty in Rinca is not wild and welcoming Komodo Dragons to all visitors who come to Rinca.

Here, I would like to clear any the opinions that make confuse every body who have been on Rinca Island. Komodo Dragons is very sensitive with to blood smell and this is one of hidden secret in their body to detective their preys after other Dragons Kill wild animal. When Komodo Dragons smell bloods from other part of their place are staying they will run to the place where smelling are coming to grab meat with other Komodo Dragons. Komodo Dragons can smell bloods from far distance about 3 – 5 kilometers away depending where the wind coming from.

As a local who worked more than 16 years experience from west Flores island, also learned with research before I would like to explain every body who have been or not to Rinca Island in Komodo National Park Indonesia that: All Komodo Dragon in Komodo National Park is wild and not like in the zoo, we never fed to Komodo Dragons and it is not allowed by Komodo National Park authority even to other wild animals. All wild life are living in natural habitats without feeding and touching to keep them in their pure environments. Relate to Komodo Dragons that always lie on entry point in Rinca Island, is not always come but when the boat bring meats, Komodo Dragon will smell and come close to jetty and will standing there until evening time back to their hole or cave. Some visitor some times attacked by the komodo Dragons because Dragon is aggressive when they smell something. As long you do not disturb He does not attack. Of course Komodo Dragons who come to there very aggressive all time by meats smelling from the tourist boat that are anchorage place.

My suggestion that: If you see Komodo Dragons are lying in front of Jetty in Rinca Island on Komodo National Park do not disturb and take picture very close it will risk for you. This is my experience and my skill that worked as tour guide special in Komodo National Park and Flores Island. We believe with local professional guides, we come to see the dragon lives in their habitat.

Armed with little knowledge and information about the dragon but it was very interesting. Not like Komodo dragon residing at the zoo already behaves very benign to the environment.

BBC news has been written with the title “How dangerous is a Komodo dragon?” Citing statements from experts of reptiles and amphibians at London zoo, Dr Ian Stephen is assistant curator of herpetology says the Komodo dragon behavior on the verge of starvation, will eat anything what smells and moves on the beach.

I have the same opinion with Yuventius; reason that makes the Komodo dragon came closer to the entrance near the harbor on Rinca. Tourists should not be too close to the Komodo dragon to take a picture. They can move incredibly quickly over short distances, Komodo dragons are very powerful, Dr. Stephen says:

“the largest lizard in the world measuring up to three meters long (9ft 10ins) and 120kg (265 lbs). And they are strong swimmers so could follow a fleeing human into the sea.”

The experts also say the same thing as the following quotation:

“Generally they attack their prey but don’t kill it there and then. They have a poisonous saliva full of different bacteria, about 80 species of bacteria. So in a couple of days septicaemia sets in and the prey dies.”

Of course, the environmental conditions will affect so that they will be aggressive. Would be better if the local guides always remind the captains and boat crews to not throw leftovers in the harbor and the boat is clean.
